Activities and Salient Achievements

A laboratory for testing quality of biomanures, biofertilizers, biopesticides & 'panchagavya' formulations has been setup.

Quality control manual for Bio-manures has been prepared depicting standardization of raw material and different methods of composing viz. NADEP, Biodung, Four-tank compost & Vermicompost production as well as standardization of the final product and grading of compost on the basis of quality. The manual also includes procedure for setting up of laboratory for quality testing of biomanures.

Shelf life study of biomanures to maintain the quality in terms of % moisture, C/N ratio & microbial count shows that the storage method of compost in pits is more efficient.

Field trials for comparative study of quality and potency of vermi-compost, vermi-wash with other composts have been carried out and results have established the superiority of vermi-compost.

The shelf life of compost enriched with cow urine (Gomutra), vermiwash, biofertilizers, amritpani, jaggery solution, linseed oil cake, gypsum and urea, etc. have been optimized.

An intensive study of two years on four hundred cow urine samples collected in six seasons (ritus) was carried out for development of standards of gomutra for quality assurance in terms of 28 effective parameters. Some of the potential parameters were further used for development of ‘Gomutra Standardization Kit.’

A production unit for different types of composts has been setup in MGIRI campus for continuous recycling of the bio-waste of the campus. New models for household composting viz. House waste vermi-composter, Kitchen waste vermi-composter, Garden waste vermicomposter, triguni model for vermin-wash production and compost sieving machine have been developed.

The technical intervention by MGIRI for recycling carcass waste through composting was successfully demonstrated at Kalyani in West Bengal and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

Improvements in bone crusher machine and pulveriser machines were also made in Kalyani for better & cleaner carcass management.

Consultations and brain storming workshops with experts & eminent scientists were held through a number of workshops. Four workshops / training programmes at New Delhi, 6 at MGIRI, Wardha and 1 each at Bishanpur & Champa, (Chhatisgarh) have been conducted for training KVIC officials, ZPC staff / Extension center Staff / Entrepreneurs on production & quality control of Bio-inoculants & Bio-manures. About 260 persons have been trained.

The interaction with experts for Ayurvedic Pharmacopial Committee, Central Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddha, Gujrat Ayurveda University and other Ayurveda experts was organized on standardization of gomutra & other panchagauvya products at MGIRI, Wardha.

The training programme for the use of gomutra standardization kit was organized at MGIRI, Wardha with participants from different goshalas.

Technical support was given for setting up of biomanure village industries in Vidarbha region.
