Objectives
To fulfill the above mentioned need in the present context, the main objectives of this Institute have been visualized as follows :

• Creating a mechanism to provide the best possible Science, Technology and Management inputs in a comprehensive manner to promote this sector.
• Creating an ethos to motivate professionally trained youth as well as senior 'experts' to work towards developing indigenous models of decentralized and eco friendly Rural Industries in tune with the Gandhian vision of development.
• Empowering the traditional craftsmen and artisans to upgrade their skills and production methods in tune with modern imperatives by providing closer interaction with Scientists, Designers, Technical and Management experts to foster creativity, innovation and quality consciousness.
• To indigenously develop and disseminate commercially viable technology packages by integrating traditional strength with modern methods to promote rural entrepreneurship at a large scale and in a sustainable way.
• To develop and disseminate appropriate HRD modules for rural entrepreneurs, field agency functionaries, RI institution trainers and Govt. officials enabling them to promote Rural Industrialization with professional rigour.
• To create/adapt innovative models of marketing, co-operative management and modern methods of quality assurance and standardization to augment the competitiveness and saleability of RI products.
• To create an active liaison with the major funding agencies such as KVIC, CAPART, DST etc. as well as with CSIR, NIRD and other rural development institutions to give a boost to the sponsored R&D as well as Technology Dissemination efforts in the RI sector.
• To setup and monitor in a co-ordinated way the network of technical interfaces in major technical institutions in the country creating an ethos for R&D dedicated to Rural Industrial sector.
• To collectively visualize and recommend important policy initiatives to facilitate the process of sustainable rural industrialization in the country.

Finally, to provide a sound platform for the NGOs, artisan clusters as well as individual entrepreneurs to interact with the above network for technical support and training.
